Many cosmetics and products intended to come into contact with eye are advertised and labelled as “gentle” or “for sensitive skin”. But how can you be sure that your products have no intrinsic quality to induce ocular irritation?
Cosmetics are safe when produced, packed and sold in a manner that they do not danger human health if applied in normal or reasonably foreseeable conditions. A useful assessment of ocular compatibility with cosmetics is given by the execution of in vivo tests and parallel ophthalmologic controls.
Chelab in collaboration with the University of Padua performs regularly ophtalmologic tests. The test can be performed only if it has already been declared that there are no significant risks for the volunteers. The volunteers who undergo the test are 15. The first application is evaluated after 30 minutes and the oculist gives a score from 0 to 4 both for erythema and edema. Then the oculist evaluates possible erythema and/or edema after 2 days and after 30 days of normal application of the product. After the interpretation of the results, the product can be classified as not irritating, lightly irritating, moderately irritating or strongly irritating. Products resulting not-irritating can report in the label the claim “ophtalmologically tested”.
